Subject:
Inspection 50-309/81-14, App. B - Battery Back-Lp Supply
Dear Sir:
In Reference (b), M11ne Yankee committed to installing a battery back-up power supply for certain security equipment.
In Reference (c), Maine Yankee notified the MlC that it was implementing a major project to provide battery back-up for other non-safety related loads, in addition to the security equipment. We indicated that the project should be completed by July 30, 1982.
Progress has been made since we last reported on the status of this project, but we will not be able to complete this modification by July 30.
The battery back-up power supply for the security equipment will be installed and operational by the end of 1982 refueling outage.
The battery inverter cannot be sufficiently loaded until other plant loads are transferred to the inverter.
This cannot be done until the appropriate plant electrical systems are shut down for the outage, because transfer of these loads involves physically rewiring, whid1 is best handled when the loads are deenergized.
Additionally, this project is interfaced with, and dependent upon the completion of two other projects.
Equipment delays in one project have delayed completion of the battery project.
