Dear Ms.. Amick:
In: response to your letter of November 1,1990, to Chairman Kenneth Carr of the U.S. Nuclear.Reaulatory Commission (NRC), we are pleaaed to assist you in identifying old low. level waste disposal sites in Massachusetts to the extent that our records and information allow.
At this time, we are aware of three locations in Massachusetts where onsite disposals by burial were ma4 before 1982. Two of the three sites are the ones mentioned in your letter, Wyman-Gordon Company and Norton Company.
The other site is Harvard University in Southborough, MA.
Enclosed with this letter is a list of sites where the NRC has approved onsite burial since 1981.
The Harvard University site.is the only site in Massachusetts
.on this list.
Other sites in Massachusetts have~become contaminated through means other than authorized waste burial.: I understand Ms. Marie Miller, of the NRC Region 1 Office'in King of: Prussia, PA, has provided you-information concerning these sites, and she-will continue to do so in the future as new information is developed.
I encourage you to contact Ms. Miller at (215) 337 5246, if the NRC can be of further assistance.: I trust that we have responded to your concern, i
Sincerely, b) habett M. Bunau

U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY Com!SSION APPROVALS OF BURIALS PURSUANT TO 10 CFR SECTION 20.302 SINCE 1981 NRC regulations in 10 CFR Section 20.302 require a licensee to submit an' application for approval of disposal by burial, including information necessary for NRC to make a determination that such disposal would not have any adverse affect on the health and safety of the public.
The attached list presents information c3 NRC approvals for burial of low-level
. radioactive waste pursuant to 10 CFR 20.302 since January 1,1981. NRC staff in Headquarters and tne Regions have reviewed the inforination in the list to provide reasonable assurance of its completeness, although the list was compiled without docket-by-docket search due to the thouserdt of docket files involved.- The data is presented for both reactors and non-reactor cases.
Note that the list does not include Agreement State approvals under State regulations that are equivalent to 10 CFR 20.302. Those records are separately maintained by each State as part of their regulatory files.
