CARB0:; DIOXIDE SYSTECS USED FOR FIRE PROTCCTIO::

IN OR ADJACENT TO CCITICAL AREAS A recent occurrence at the Grand Gulf Unit : reactor involved the actta tion of the CO2 systen in the ECCS penetratial roca. The event was initiated by a short in the initiation circuit relay. The systea operated repeatedly until the pressure in the roon forced open the locked door to the auxiliary bu il ding negion II daily report - July 14, 1932..

In addition to use in the ECCS penetratial rocn at Grand Gulf, AEOD is aware that C00 is used in the diesel generator rocas at several nuclear facilities, propose!I for use for fire protection in the coltrol roca and diesel generator rou;s at Perry, and believe that there may be other cases in which CO2 is used either in or adjacent to areas coltaining ecliplent reluired to nitigate or prevent reactor accidents. x The use of CO2 in critical plant areas gives rise to several concerns which nay not have been fully addressed in licensing revicus. The following are cur co1cerns: #
