'*I Gentlemen:

I wish to inform the Atomic Safety and Licensing Appeal Board that the completion of the NRC Staff's safety evaluation of the proposed technical specification change for the North Anna Unit 1 Operating License regard-ing the allowable limits for settlement of the service water pumphouse is currently scheduled for the end of November.

The Staff is aware of the need for prompt resolution of this matter, in that the Appeal 8 card's review of the Initial Decision authorizing the issuance of operating licenses for North Anna Units 1 and 2 is being delayed pending receipt of the Staff's evaluation. The delay was necessitated, however, by the Staff's recent determination that it must evaluate the effects of the pumphouse settlement on connections between the pumphouse and spray piping, and that it should consider in greater detail the monitoring system for the auxiliary service water structure on Lake Anna.
