Dear Dr. Nagle:
At the request of Chairman Selin, I am responding to your letter of October 26, 1993, in which you announce the formation of your new coalition, Organizations United For Responsible low-Level Radioactive Waste Solutions.
We appreciate your informing us about the creation of this group.
It appears that the goals of the organization are generally in concert with the Commission policy regarding low-level waste (LLW). The Commission strongly supports the Low-Level Radioactive Waste Policy Amendments Act of 1985 with its incentives for States and Compacts to develop LLW disposal sites in a timely manner.
The Commission believes that permanent disposal of waste, as opposed to long-term storage, is in the best interest of public health and safety, as well as the environment. An organization such as yours will help focus public attention on the need for the development of new and safe disposal facilities.
Framing the issue in terms of the impact on the benefits provided by nuclear materials will hopefully increase the public awareness of the consequences of not having new disposal facilities.
If there are LLW issues you wish to discuss with us, I encourage you or other representatives of Organizations United to contact Michael Bell, Chief of the Low-Level Waste Management Branch, Division of Low-Level Waste Management and Decommissioning, Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards.
