This letter refers to the safety inspection conducted by Dr. Jason C. Jang of this of6ce on
January 10-14, 1994, of activities authorized by NRC License Nos. DPR-21, DPR-65, and
MPF-49 at the Northeast Utilities Service Company (NU), Berlin, Connecticut and to the
discussion of our findings held by Dr. Jang with Mr. R. Schmidt and other members of your

staff at the conclusion of the insi,ection.

Areas examined during this inspeaan are important to public health and safety and included
your capability for calculating projected radiation doses resulting from radioactive liquid and
gaseous effluent releases, as described in the NRC Region I Inspection Report that is
enclosed with this letter. Within these areas, the inspection consisted of selective
examinations of procedures and representative records, Interviews with personnel, and
observations by the inspector.
Within the scope of uns inspection, we noted that you had excellent projected dose
calculation capabilly. We noted further that the responsible individuals in the Radiation
Assessment Bran.:h (RAB) had excellent knowledge to implement the projected dose
calculation methodology. No safety concerns or violations of NRC requirements were
identined in your program,
