CATEGORICAL EXCLUSION FOR AMENDMENT REQUEST DATED JUN2 27, 1990 T
a By letter dated June 27, 1990, GA requested an amendment to License No, SNM-696 to authorize use of a shredder / compactor. GA is currently authorized to use a compactor to reduce waste volume. Thi:: request is therefore a modification of an' authorized activity. A HEPA filtration system attached to the shredder chamber confines airborne material during the shredding operation. A covered discharge conveyor receives the shredded debris and transfers it to the i
compactor. A HEPA filtration system confines airborne material generated during compaction operations. Discharge air from all systems is routed to existing ducting and is sampled prior to discharge. The addition of the
. shredder unit should not significantly increase or change the types of effluents.
Since the system is enclosed, worker exposure should not be significantly increased. GA plans to utilize continuous area sampling in the general area where the shredding / compacting activities take place. The staff has concluded that the following conditions have been met:

There is no significant change in the type or significant increase in the 4
amount of any effluents that may be released offsite, 2.
- There is no significant increase-in individual or cumulative occupational
-radiation exposure, 3.~
There is no significant construction impact, and

Th'.tre is no significant increase in the potential for or consequences fram radiological accidents.
Therefore, in accordance with 10 CFR_51.22(c)(11), neither an Environmental Atsessment nor an Environmental Impact Statement is warranted for this proposed action.
