Mr. Richard Parrish Us Army Corps of Engineers Alaska District FO Box 898 Anchorage, Alaska 99506-0898
Dear Mr. Parrish:
Enclosed, per our phone conversation today, please find letters October 9,1962 and February 28,1963 both from the USGS to the Atomic Energy Commission. They detail the experimental introduction of radioactive isotopes into the environment near Cape Thompson, Alaska in August 1962. From this docutnentation it appears that amounts of strontium 85 and cesium 137 buried near the Chariot site " exceeded by 1000 times" the amounts allowed under AEC regulations.
I understand that the Coms of Engineers has issued a contract under the Defense Environmental Restoration Program for clean-up of the Chariot site.
Therefore I thought the Corps ought to investigate whether this documented contamination of the site with radionuclides should be cleaned up as well.
As I mentioned, I am a research associate at the University of Alaska Fairbanks'and am currently researching Project Chariot. I am depositing into the archives at Rasmuson Library all of the papcts and reports I acquire. I would very much appreciate any documentation of the Chariot Site clean-up you can provide me:
- 1. Probably there is a document which justifies why the site was proposed for environmental restoration.
- 2. A descriptive report of the work done, the cost, etc.
- 3. A copy of the contract which was let for the work.
- 4. Photographs documenting the "before" and "after" condition.
Sincerely, y,) J...; I &'A Dan O'Neill
