Dear Mr. Thorne:
n Enclosed is an application for an export license (XSOU8697), recently received-by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, for the export of 79.17 grams of uranium 1
to Japan. The uranium, in the form of uranium dioxide-gadolinium dioxide (V,Gd)0 pellets, was' originally shipped from Japan to General Electric's Valleci[os Nuclear Center (GE-NVC)~..
GE-VNC inspected the pellets and then forwarded them to Rice University in 1
-Houston, Texas for heat capacity measurements.
Upon completion of the tests,-
1 LRice University will return the pellets to GE-VNC; GE will again inspect the pellets-and then return them to Japan.
LThe' Government of Japan has requested that the material be subject to-all of-J the terms and conditions of the U.S.-Japan Agreement for Cooperation.
Your assistance in obtaining the necessary assurances will, be appreciated.
