METEOROLOGICAL MONITORING INSTRUMENTATION SPECIAL REPORT TECIINICAL SPECIFICATION 333.4.a HACKGROUND On August 11, 1990, the Meteorological Information Data Acquisition System (MIDAS), which provides meteorological information to the Control Room, was out of service due to a loss of power to the primary tower. After power was restored two days later, it was discovered that equipment inside the telephone cabinet at the primary tower had been severely damaged and the telephone cable had been severed. 'Ihe equipment in the cabinet was repaired and an alternate telephone cable route was found and connected. We will attempt to repair the original cable.
CAUSE OF MALFUNCTION The loss of power was caused by a fault in the power cable from the switchyard house to the meteorological tower. This fault appears to have been caused by moisture intrusion into an existing nick in the cable. It has not been determined whether the damage in the telephone cabinet was a result of the power cable problem or caused by a lightening strike.'The telephone cable was probably damaged by some construction work going on.ncriby. This will be verified when the original cable is examined.
PI ANS FOR RESTORING TIIE CilANNEL TO OPERAi1LE STATUS i
MIDAS was restored to operable status on August 21,1990, following a final circuit board switch alignment.
