SUBJECT: NRC INSPECTION REPORT NO. 50-271/93-16
This letter refers to the announced safety inspection conducted by Mr. J. Stewart and
Mr. M. Buckley of this office from October 11 - 15, 1993. The inspectors reviewed the
i
programs being implemented in response to NRC Generic Letter 89-10 " Safety-Related
!
Motor-Operated Valve Testing and Surveillance-." This generic letter and its supplements
!
provided guidelines to ensure motor-operated valves would be functional during design basis
accident conditions thereby protecting the health and safety of the public. At the conclusion
of the on-site inspection, the results were discussed with Mr. R. Wanczyk and others of your
staff. Additional information was obtained after the on-site inspection and the inspection
concluded on December 14, 1993, with a review of the status of the findings as detailed in
i
the report.
Our inspectors found your program for determining the design basis and verifying the
capability of motor-operated valves to be in accordance with the program commitments made
by your staff at a May 26,1993, presentation to the NRC We also observed a program for
!
controlling MOV switch settings and conducting maintenance on motor-operated valves that
assured safe operations of safety related valves.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter and
[
the enclosure will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
