January 10,1993 MKTG-94-410 Mr. Jim Hickey Chief Enrichment Branch Division of Fuel Cycle Safety and Safeguards Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555
Dear Mr. Hickey:
Subject:
NUREG 1494 Draft Environmental Impact Statement Claiborne Enrichment Center Recently, NRC issued NUREG-1494 Draft EIS, Claiborne Enrichment Center. This proceeding is panicularly significant as it represents the first demonstration of the combined construction operating license process.
Westinghouse fully supports the recently lasued Draft Environmental Impact Statement recommending Ilcensing of the privately owned uranium enrichment plant proposed by 1.ouisiana Enrichment Services. We agree that the energy efficient centrifuge technology proposed will " provide a competitive and reliable national source of uranium enrichment services to U.S. commercial customers and would contribute to U.S. Independence from foreign sources...".
As expressed by the other members of the Nuclear Power Oversight Committee, i
Westinghouse also endorses your recommendation to license the facility at the earliest possible date.
Sincerely,
- .I.. s
