Mikulski i

United States Senate Washington, DC 20S10 Dear Senator Mikulski Considering the urgency of increasing our domestic energy supply it's terrifyina that comaress still hasn't passed legisl ation to facilitate and encourage building nuclear energy plants and to l

open the Alaskan and other wildlife refuaes to oil exploration.

One of the most critical issues that seems to give environmentalists an excuse to oppose Nuclear Energy is the disposal problem.

Please work toward passage of legislation to FORCE the Yucca Mountain study to be concluded Quickly.

If we can get one such site approved and operating it should be much easier to add others.

The disposal problem is not nearly as serious as the radical element claims it to be, and this will become evident as we gain expertence. While I personally believe the Government should not be i nvol ved in Nuclear R&D, since money is already appropriated to fund nuclear waste disposal, please l

see that the IFR project in Idaho is approved and expedited.

l I realize some progress has been made in leaislation to speed the licensing of Nuclear Plants prior to compl etion, but more must be done quickly to assure power companies that their Nuclear plans can't be thwarted or delayed by opposition groups after they've beaun construction.

I reali:e there are many bills in congress aimed at conserving eneray and for funding alternatives like solar, wind and j

alternate fuels, but conservation i s not the way we should be i

headed, nor is government R&D.

Emphasis on either of these approaches merely depresses the economy and increases bureaucracy and interference.

Just take off all restraints and the market will make the appropriate balance between supply, alternative i

fuels and conservation.

Also stop trying to deceive the public by taxing facilities for i

nuclear waste disposal and similar pro.)ects and then dumping it into the general pot.

I cc Pres. Clinton Sincerely, V.P.
