Dear Mr. Hickey:

I l

The U.S.

Council for Energy Awareness has sent me an abstract and 1

" Summary and Conclusions" of the Draft Environmental-Impact.

j Statement (DE1S) for the Clairborne Parish, Louisiana-uranium enrichment f acility.

I have reviewed this material and I urge thb 1

Nuclear Regulatory Commission to support the findings of the DEIS j

and expedite the licensing process of the facility.

1 hold a strong opinion that the country should find ways to make i

j the nuclear option a more prominent part of our energy production i

strategy.

With the progress made in the design of the new breed of reactors with passive safe shutdown features and-with the commitment to the continued saf e operation of the existing plants, l

we have the potential to realize a reduced dependence on fossil i

generation in the future.

l The uranium enrichment step in the fuel cycle: can be greatly optimized through the application of the centrifuge technology.

i The construction and operation of the Louisiana facility will ensure we are not dependent upon foreign countries for this f

critical step in the f uel cycle.

Based upon the information in the j

DEIS, the site seems well suited from the standpoint of l

environmental factors, risk to public health and safety, and socioeconomic impacts to the area.

1 Again, I urge the NRC to support the DEIS and to expedite the licensing of the facility.
