Dear Mr. Gradert:
This refers to the special inspection and radiological survey conducted by Mr. Ken Lambert on September 21-23, 1993, and by Messrs. Ken Lambert, Don Sreniawski, and Gary Shear on October 15, 1993, at the former Permanent Mold Division of the Cleveland Works facility. The purpose of this inspection was to accompany Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (0 RISE) during the confirmatory survey of Building 65 and to conduct a survey south of former Building /1 in grid location A,0.
The enclosed copy of the inspection report identifies the areas surveyed by NRC and discusses the ORISC confirmatory survey. The radiological measurements of grid location A,0 are indistinguishable from background. Soil sample analysis results indicate the presence of radium-226, thorium-232, and uranium-238 below NRC's unrestricted release criteria. The suitability of releasing-Building 65 for unrestricted use will be determined after the ORISE confirmatory survey report is provided to NRC.
