m w ao 70 December 27,1993 Mr. John W.N. Hickey Chief, Enrichment Branch Division of Fuel Cycle Safety and Safeguards Office ofNuclear Material Safety and Safeguards, Mailstop 4-E-4 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washmgton, D.C. 20555

Dear Mr. Hickey:

I urge you to support the findings of the DEIS and to expedite the licensing process for the Claibome Parish facility in Northern Louisiana (the Clai%rne Enrichment Center). I have read the comments and reviews regarding the DEIS and think it is very adsisable to support this Statement and not be influenced in the least by any anti-nuclear radica this regard. The U.S.A. is in great danger of being left in the " dark ages" if we do not begin to intelligently and objectively develop nuclear power generating facilities for the future. We have the resources and raw materials for nuclear energy and the technology to overcome any realistic problems. Nuclear energy is the only logical bright spot in the energy development horizon and has been inhibited only by fanatical and emotional opposition with no factual basis.

It is strange we live in this media controlled environment based on what is " politically correct." Nuclear energy has been pressured illogically into a zone of" political incorrectness " On the otherhand, windpower is a " politically correct" scheme that has been touted for 20 years as clean, renewable, and alternative. I own a ranch in south central Montana on the beautiful and envircamentally sensitive Yellowstone River. We have approximately 5,000 resident and migratory golden and bald eagles traversing t valley annually. I have learned in recent months that the windpower installations in Altamont Pass, California alone have been slaughtering 40 to 70 of these great raptors annually and for what - a miniscule amount of unreliable power subsidized by the other utilities. There is no question in my mind as to which of these two developments (Nuclear vs. Wind) should be classified as " politically correct". It is time we throw out the politics and look at facts.

The facts show that nuclear energy is a power source we need to cultivate for the future.

Sincerely y
