Dear Mr. Hickey:
CLAIBORNE ENRICHMENT CENTER I recommend that you support the findings of NRC's Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed Claiborne Enrich--
ment Center and that you expedite the licensing process for the Center.
I base this recommendation on review of the
SUMMARY
. AND CONCLUSIONS f rom the Draf t Environmental Impact Statement and from the following information:
Anyone truly interested in conservation should support construction and operation of'this facility because of its ef ficient use of electricity.
Centrifuge enrichment requires only about 10% as much electricity as does gaseous diffusion.
To the extent that the proposed Claiborne Enrichment Center will reduce the demand for enrichment f rom the existing Gaseous Diffusion Plants the associated demand for electricity will' be reduced by about 9 0 ?..
Somewhat larger savings in electricity could be obtained.
from competing technologies such as AVLIS (Atomic Vapor Laser Isotope Separation) but I do not believe. that these other technologies are as yet ready'for commercializa-tion.
Very truly yours, l.
