Dear Mr. Berg:

SUBJECT:

EXAMINATION REPORT On the week of November 15, 1993, the NRC administered examinations to '

employees of your organization who had applied for licenses to operate your .

Braidwood Nuclear Station. In . addition, a simulator requalification retake ,

examination was administered to one Senior Reactor Operator and a crew evaluation was also conducted. At the conclusion of the examination, the examination questions and preliminary findings were discussed with those. >

members of your staff identified in the enclosed report. ,

The NRC' examiners identified a noticeable decline in license candidate o performance on the dynamic simulator examination. Additionally, an apparent

{' trend regarding a knowledge weakness on shutdown cooling events is discussed in Section 3. -

When compared to past initial examinations administered at the Braidwood ,

Station, license candidate performance on the dynamic simulator examination  ;

was considered below average. Out of-four candidates, one failed the l examination due to demonstrated. weaknesses.in numerous' competencies.-  ;

Additionally, two other candidates demonstrated significant weaknesses.

Overall, this group of license candidates was, considered weak.

No response regarding these observations is required. However, in order to preclude unsatisfactory results on future examinations you. should ensure that these apparent trends do not continue. '

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the Commission's regulations, a copy of  !

this letter and the enclosures will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
