COMMENTS RELATED TO FIRE PROTECTION REVIEW EPRI ALWR REQUIREMENTS DOCUMENT CHAPTER 12 - RADIOACTIVE WASTE PROCESSING SYSTEMS r

The staff found no references to fire protection in Cha)ter 12 - Radioactive Waste Processing Systems. To be consistent with the otter chapters of the EPRI ALWR Requirements Document, the staff believes that a statement is required in Section I, " Introduction," that appropriate fire protection will be provided for all waste processing systems.

In addition, particular fire protection considerations should be addressed, as i

required, in each section.

Examples of fire protection considerations that should be addressed for each system include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following items:

Solid Radioactive Waste Processing Automatic fire detection Autonatic fire suppression Interface of fire detection / fire suppression /HVAC systems Collection and processing o' fire suppressants that may themselves have become contaminated Lfquid Radioactive Waste Processing All items mentioned above for solid waste processing, plus Special consideration which may be required due to processing combustible or flennable liquids including the need for electrical equipment suitable for hazardous environments Gaseous Padioactive Waste Processing All items mentioned above for solid waste processing, plus Special consideration which may be required due to processing flanmiable gases including the need for electrical equipment suitable for hazardous environments Special fire protection recommendations for activated charcoal absorbers i
