BACKGROUND RETRAN02 is one-dimensional, best-estimate, thermal-hydraulic, transient analysis computer code under the sponsorship of the Electric Power Research Institute. The NRCs Safety Evaluation Report for RETRAN02 M002 was issued on September 2, 1984 Subsequently RETRAN02 M003 and RETRAN02 M004 were reviewed j

by the NRC and approved for use in 1988..The RETRAN02 M005.0 version contains j

35 changes to the M004 version. Thirty-two changes were made to correct reported code errors. The other three changes were made to incorporate new models. The. purpose of the submittal is to review RETRAN02 MOD 5 for its.

acceptance for generic use in licensing applications for calculating.the j

transient response of nucle 6r pcwer plant behavior, subject to the conditicr.5 I

outlined in the previous safety evaluation reports.

i OBJECTIVE The objective of this task order is to obtain technical expertise' from ITS to u.sist the stuf f in determining the acceptability RETRAN02-M005.0 and the> significance of'the-reported code errors.on previous; analyses.

At the completion of Task 3, submit a draf t TER in accoraance with the basic project statement of work (50W). The TER shall contain an executive summary, a discussion of the work perforned, conclusions reached with technical bases, and recommendations as to the acceptability ci the topical report reviewed.

APPLICABLE SPECIAL PROVISIONS The work specified in this 50W is licensee fee recoverable.

The contractor shall provide fee recovery information in the monthly progress reports as specified in Section F.3.2 of the basic contract.

NRC FURNISHED MATERIALS The NRC will provide all necessary documentation to facilitate successful completion of this project. This will include volumes 1,2, and 3 of RETRAN02, M005.0 and description of code modifications and other relevant material.
