Dear Liz:

Thank you for your kind remarks in your letter of October 24, 1993, concerning the assistance provided by Carl Stoiber, Mike Congdon, Gordon Fowler, and other.NRC staff members in support of U.S.

efforts to enhance the safety of Soviet-designed nuclear reactors.

I know that this must be a particularly hectic time for you given the emphasis being placed on Russian and Eastern European nuclear safety assis-tance, and therefore I appreciate all the more your taking the time to inform me of these NRC employees' performance.

I took the liberty of forwarding your letter to them, so that they would know how much their efforts were appreciated.

I am indeed pleased by our progress in the effort to enhance nuclear safety and the extent to which NRC employees are contributing to that effort.

Of course, we have numerous difficult challenges ahead of us on these matters, and I look forward to continuing cooperation between NRC, the Department, and others involved in this critical policy area.

Sincerely, j
