Thank you for your letter of July 6,1990, inviting the Nuclear Regulatory Co.anission (NRC) to become an associate member of.the Comittee on Earth Sciences (CES).

I-have asked Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director of the Office.

of Governmental and Public Affairs, to-serve as_ourirepresentative to the CES. As you have noted, Mr. Thomas J. Nicholson and Dr. Ralph E. Cady are currently members of the CES Subcomittee on Ground Water. Additionally, Mr. Clemens J. Heltemes is a member of the Subcomittee on M:cigation and Adaptation Research Strategies.

We appreciate the opportunity to participate in the CES as an associate L

member and look forward to continuing to provide the regulatory perspective of the NRC in the two Subcomittees en which we are currently represented.
