d Docket 70-903 Chevron Research and Technology company OCT 0 S 1993 Attn:
Mr. John D. Wolff Senior Superfund Specialist Point" Richmond Technical Center l
P.O. Box 4054 l
Richmond, California 84804-0054
Dear Mr. Wolff:
SUBJECT:
APPROVAL TO DEM0LISH THE ENGINEERING BUILDING, CRITICAL FACILITY, SHIELD M0CK-UP BUILDING, THE LODGE, AND REMOTE ASSEMBLY BUILDING This letter refers to your verbal request, made during our September 30, 1993, telephone conversation, for approval to demolish the Engineering Building, Critical Facility, Shield Mock-up Building, Remote Assembly Building, and the Lodge.
Based on the review of the results of two surveys performed by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (0 RISE) reported in: 1) the
" Radiological Survey of the Nuclear Lake Site, Pawling, New York" (0RAU 88/G-89, July 1988), and 2) an October 4,1993, letter report entitled
" Confirmatory and Radiological Surveys of the Nuclear Lake Site, Pawling, New Yark" [ Docket No 070-00903]," the Nuclear Regulatory Commission hereby approves the demolition of the Engineering Building, Critical Facility, Shield Mock-up Building, the Lodge, and Remote Assembly Building.
This letter does not serve as approval to demolish the Plutonium Building, Multiple Failure Building, and Waste Disposal Building.
Before approving the demolition of these three buildings, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission needs to review the results of the confirmatory survey conducted by ORISE on September 20-28, 1993, and the results of any additional surveys conducted by Chevron following the confirmatory survey. Assuming that the results of the additional surveys conducted by Chevron are submitted in a timely fashion, and that both the Chevron and ORISE survey results are acceptable, NRC should formally notify Chevron of approval to demolish the Plutonium Building, Multiple failure Building, and Waste Disposal Building on or before October 31, 1993.
If you have any questions, please contact me on (301) 504-3435 or Timothy C. Johnson on (301) 504-3603.
Sincerely,
