Docket No. 70-734: SNM496;
.Urcent Request for Extension of Physical Inventory Closure bequirements of 10 CFR 70.51(c)(4) & FNMC Plan Section 6.2.1.1
Dear Mr. Sherr:
General Atomics (GA) hereby requests a two-week extension from October 12, 1993 to October 26, 1993 in closing our Plant II (TRIGA Fabricar:on) <20% enriched uranium physical inventory.
The reason for this request is due to an electronic problem discovered in the process i
furnace used to burn uranium / zirconium fines generated during centerless grinding operation of fuel meats. A filter from this operation was scheduled to N burned immediately following j
the September ?3,1993 physical inventory in order to obtain samples for uranium and isotopic measurement. After several days attempting to burn the filter, it finally was reduced to an oxide and sampled. However, the isotopic samples will not be ready for shipment to Teledyne Isotopes for measurement until October 4 or 5,1993, thus necessitating this exemption request.
I Based on our production records, the filter only contained 2.91 grams of19.8% enriched uranium. However, the inventory cannot be closed without measured values for this item.
In an effort to shorten the response time to this request, we have faxed a copy of this letter to Mr. Don Joy. If you require any additional information in order to grant this exception, please contact Mr. C. L. Wisham at (619) 455-4171 or me at (619) 455-2823.
