WASHINGTON. D. C. 20666 August 6,.1990-The Honorable Lane Evans i

l United States House of Representatives Washington, D.C.

20515 i

Dear Congressman Evans:

In our letter to you of May 25,1990, we committed to keep you updated on the cracks in the reactor vessel head at the Quad Cities Station, Unit 2, by sending you additional documents as they become available. Enclosed are two documents submitted by Comonwealth Edison Company, the licensee., of June 29, 1990, contains the results of the boat sample' metallurgical examination and the results of the Scanning Electron Micro-

' scopy. Enclosure 2, of Jul;r 2,1990, provides the fabrication history of three of the licensee's six Boiling Water Reatior Vessels, including the vessel of Quad Cities, Unit 2.

We have reviewed these two documents and we continue to believe that operation of Quad. Cities, Unit 2, with the cracks; poses no safety concern. As we stated in our letter of May 25, 1990, Commonwealth Edison will inspect the vessel head at the next refueling outage, scheduled for September 1991. We will review the results of that ins)ection and will determine whether any expected growth of the cracks mig 1t compromise structural integrity of the vessel.

We will continue to keep you updated on this issue.

Sincerely, l

(\\
