Dear Sir:
The Nuclear Information and Resource Service respectfully requests that the comment period on NUREG-1484 (Draft). Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the Construction and Operation of the Claibome Enrichment Center, llomer, Louisiana, be extended for 90 days, through April 10,1994.
NUREG-1484 is a lengthy document and includes a large amount of technical information e
regarding radiation and hazardous substance releases, geography, geology, etc. The present 45-day comment period--especially coming as it does over the holidays when many people travel and have quite full schedules--is insufficient to adequately examine and comment upon many of j
i these issues.
i in addition, in the few days since its release, NUREG-1484 already has proven controversial and j
has received considerable publicity, especially in northern Louisiana--even though it is still largely unavailable there. We expect that there will be considerable interest among the public in reviewing and commenting on this document. It will be to everyone's benefit to encourage the l
widest possible public comment. It will take time, however, particularly over the holiday season, i
for the NRC to disseminate this document to everyone who wants one, and then for members of the public to prepare their comments.

- Finally, we cannot accept as an excuse for not extending the comment period the p I
an extension could delay Louisiana Energy Services' current licensing schedule. This p project already has been considerably delayed, and the delays have been due entirely t 1
own actions. It would be grossly unfair to adversely affect either the quantity or quality o comments because LES now wants to hurry things up.
i Please inform us of the disposition of this request as soon as possible.
Sincerely,-
