ANNUAL REPORT ON EMERGING TECHNICAL CONCERNS

Purpose:

To inform the Commission of newly emerging technical concerns and proposed approaches for their resolution.

Backaround:

In the November 13, 1989, staff requirements memorandum (SRM 891025),the Commission asked the staff to keep it informed of new issues and to propose l

approaches for resolving these issues. The Commission i.lso asked the staff to work closely with the industry for a timely resolution of each technical issue.

I Discussion:

The staff has identified no technical concerns that should be brought to the attention of the Commission at this time. The processes now in place to inform the Commission of generic communications of significance and specific communications to the Commission on developing issues continue to serve the purpose originally intended for this report.

In addition, the publication of significant generic communications for public comment continues to provide an j

open mechanism for obtaining interaction with industry with regard to timely resolution of complex issues while reducing unnecessary impacts.

Examples of issues in various stages of resolution in the past year include the potential loss of spent fuel pool cooling following a loss of coolant accident, reactor internals cracking (core shroud, jet pump hold-down beam), and the revised i

Eastern U.S. seismic hazard. Therefore, in view of the above, we intend to l

discontinue this report.
