MEMORANDUM To:

James M. Taylor Executive Director for

,L ations FROM:

Samuel J.

Chilk, Secret.

SUBJECT:

COMSECY-93-021 - STRATEGIkSANDOPTIONSFOR ENCOURAGING THE STATES AND COMPACTS TO DEVEIDP NEW LOW-LEVEL RADIOACTIVE WASTE DISPOSAL FACILITIES The Commission (with all Commissioners agreeing) believes that it would be premature to undertake additional major efforts in this area since there are still major actions being undertaken-by the States and Compacts in order to meet their obligations under the Low Level Radioactive Waste Policy Amendments Act of 1985 and a major initiative at this time may have unintended consequences.

The staff should keep the Commission informed of further developments in this area and reconsider these or similar initiatives at some time in the future, if directed by the Commission.
