VISil 101HE WEST VALLEY DEMONSTRATION PROJECT From October 31 to November 2,1990, I visited the West Valley Demonstration-Project with Jerry J. Swif t and Charles J. Haughney of the Division of Industrial and Medical Nuclear Safety.
1he main purpose of the visit was for Mr. Haughney, Chief of the Fuel Cycle Safety Branch, and Mr. Swift Section l
Leader of the Advanced Fuel and Special Facilities Section of that Branch, 1
to acquaint themselves with recent developments at West Valley, We viewed nearly all parts nf the site, including the old reprocessing plant, the tank farm, the Supernatant Treatment System, the Cement Solidification System, the Drum Cell, the two burial grounds, the effluent lagoons, and the low-level waste storage tents. We reviewed the Department of Energy's (DOE's) timetable for future processing activities and-discussed the meeting-scheduled for November 20, 1990, at NRC headquarters.
DOE confirmed that they will send us a Safety Analysis Report on sludge-washing in January 1991.
Sludge washing is scheduled for startup in April 1991. -00E repeated their request that NRC provide a certification of the acceptability of the~ cemented waste generated by the sludge washing system.
