PURDUE SCHOOL OF NUCLEAR ENGINEERING April 15, 1982 Mr. Paul Boehnert ACRS US Nuclear Regulatory Comission Washington, D.C.

Dear Paul:

RE: Mark III Pool Swell Velocity Specification The information you transmitted to me with your March 8 letter refers to GE's analytical predictions of the 5706/7 air test in GE's PSTF.

I do not know if this is the single full scale test we heard so much about in meetings.

I reiterate my suggestion. The analysis should be made to match as closely as possible the full scale test using the actual drywell pressure (measured). A prediction for the reactor case should then be carried out with the same model and the drywell pressure transient expected for the reactor case. Based on what I have seen already I believe this procedure would be a worthwhile check on the numbers arrived at by scaling up " distorted" small scale test results.

Sincerely, l

T. G. Theofanous l
