GRAY PANTHERS Testimony Mildred Sklar NY uroy raut.neu I am Mildred Sklar, chairperson of the Health Task Force of the New York Gray Panthers.

We are appallled that anycne coQld l

conceive of the idea that the city of New York could be evacuated in case of an accident at Indian Poinc.

Indian Point is in the midst of a metro 1 polis--nine million people live within a sixty mile radius of Indian point, and comprise ten per cent of the population of the United States /

The notion that small commhnities could ever provide housing, water, food, and health facilities is ridiculous.

These plans are an undue risk to public health and safety posed by the operation of the Indian Point plant.

In relation to the frail and handicapped elderly, who have special problems, as well as older people in nursing homes, You are not dealing with reality when you talk about plans to evacuate them.

There are over a million people who are 60 and older living the five boros of NYC.*

Of these 6.7 are in nursing homes and are severely Ir;ipaired and will need assistance in mobility and personal care.

The only solution to the problem is the complete shutdown of the plants themselves.
