SUBJECT:
REGULATORY GUIDE 1.86 RELEASE LIMITS'FOR PLUT0NIUM'- 241-This memorandum is in response to your request-of. October:29,1993, regarding-the appropriate release limit for Plutonium 241 (Pu-241), a weak beta emitter.
The data provided in your memorandum has been reviewed,y and the following guidance is provided.
Of concern in providing the guidance, was.the in-growth of Americium 241'(Am-241), an alpha emitter, from the decay of Pu-241. Several methods of accounting for Am-241 were reviewed to determine the effect of the in-growth on the release limits.
Based upon the data provided in your memorandum, it was determined that the release limit:should be adjusted to 93 ~dpm/100 cm' to account for the eventual in-growth of Am-241.
However, the differenceL between the adjusted release limit and the normal release limit (93 dpm/100 cm' verses 100 dpm/ 100 cm*) would not be detectable by survey instrumentation.
Thus, for the mix of radionuclides specified in your memorandum,- the appropriate release limits used for Plutonium 241 should be those for beta--
gamma radionuclides, and the release limit for gross alpha should be used to account for the in-growth of Am-241. These' limits are specified in Regulatory Guide 1.86.
