This letter refers to the announced inspection, intended to promote public health and safety,
conducted by Mr. Robert A. McBrearty on September 20-30,1993, at the Peach Bottom
.
I
Atomic Power Station, Units 2 and 3, Delta, Pennsylvania. Mr. McBrearty discussed the
results of the inspection with Mr. D. B. Miller, Jr. and others of your staff at the conclusion
of the inspection.
,
This inspection was directed toward the inservice inspection program and implementation of
the long-term erosion / corrosion monitoring program. These inspections are used to
-
determine that programs you have in place to detect degradation satisfy your commitments
and regulatory requirements. Generally, we found yor program implementation
satisfactory. Areas examined during this inspection are described in the NRC Region I
inspection report which is enclosed with this letter. Within these areas, the inspection
consisted of selective examinations of procedures and representative records, interviews with
personnel, and observations by the inspector. Your decision to perform the
'
erosion / corrosion examination of the reactor feedwater pump carbon steel piping at location
16.1 early in the outage, and the prior procurement of its replacement piping, fabricated of a .
more erosion /conosion resistant material, is considered to be evidence of good planning and
,
outage management.

Within the scope of this inspection, the inservice inspection examinations, the
erosion / corrosion examinations, and related program and procedures were found to be in
I
accordance with the applicable codes, standards, and NRC regulations.
