REQUEST FOR CLARIFICATION OF THE PROPOSED NRC SUPPLEMENT 1 TO GENERIC ~ LETTER 92-08 Your letter dated September 20, 1993, requested clarification of the proposed supplement.
In particular it addressed the two different flame spread ratings i
specified in the definition of " noncombustible material."
The flame spread, smoke, and fuel contribution of 25 pertains only to interior finishes.
From a fire protection engineering perspective, and in the context in which it was used in the NRC Branch Technical Position (BTP) referenced by the proposed supplement, an interior finish is considered to consist of those materials or combination of materials that form the exposed surfaces of wall, floor, or ceiling constructions.
Types of interior finish materials are numerous and include such commonly used materials as plaster, gypsum wall board, fibrous ceiling tiles, and a variety of wall coverings.
Surface coatings, such as paint, may also be included along with the substrate to which they are applied.
i By the above definition, thermal insulation would not be considered an interior finish and therefore would not be covered by the exception noted in i
the NRC BTP.
