Dear Senator Mikulski:

a you'ttta? xnoW;"me ~6ucrsar Tegulatory Coddissibn has lenied the petition of Maryland residents to reopen public hearings concern-ing the hazards of above ground storage of spent nuclear fuel at the Calvert Cliffs nuclear plant. Since the Columbia Gas Company plans to resume processing natural gas at its plant located a few miles from the nuclear plant, we feel there is even more risk of a nuclear disaster. A gas cloud explosion above or near the nuclear plant could cause severe damage or total destruction of the plant and 4

storage facility. Our county would become a wasteland with many casualties.

Citizens throughout our country are joining together to voice their opposition to the NRC's spent fuel storage plan. Congress needs to examine this serious environmental problem thoroughly and carefully. The following concerns should be considered:

The danger of decidents at nuclear plants The danger of accidents in the spent fuel storage process The vast amount of spent fuel already in existence The need to guard and monitor this spent fuel for centuries until it is less harmful The great cost of monitoring and guarding this spent fuel through the many, many years Every day we use nuclear fuel, more spent fuel is accumulated e

f F

d The failure of the NRC to provide a permanent repository for the spent fuel The fact that the spent fuel science is very rew and problems are beginning to be anticipated The fact that other fuels that may not cause videspread devastation are available ( natural gas, etc.)

The use of nuclear fuel should be stopped. The United c3'scont1Euing'the*use81*nu' lear'fue$$

e Please support our request to stop above ground storage of spent fuel at the Calvert Cliffs plant and support our concern for the health and safety of Calvert County residents and other Maryland residents.

Sinc rely yours, Phyllis
