Report No. 3983 Page 2 1.

Introduction 1.1 This report will compare the Crosby 3M 6 HCU-65 Spec. Safety Valves, Assembly 2

l Number 48697 Mod. 2, installed at Dairyland Power with the Crosby 3M,6 HC-75 Safety Valves, Assembly Number 43864, installed at Consumers Power Big Rock Point Plant.

1.2 The following areas will be addressed:

1.2.1 Comparison of valve orifice areas and valve inlet and outlet sizes and flange ratings.

1.2.2 Conparison of valve materials.

1.2.3 Comparison of valve internals (nozzle, nozzle ring, disc insert, disc holder, guide and guide ring).

Report any dimensional differences that would have an effect on valve performance.

Comparisons on actual drawing dimensions which are propriatory will not be reported by physi-cal dimension but differences, if any, will be noted.

1.2.4 Comparison of valve set pressures and springs.

1.2.5 Ccmparison of any differences in design features that could cause a difference in valve performance.

1.3 Incidental valve parts (cap, lever, spindle nut, studs, nuts, etc. ) that have no effect on valve performance will not be considered.

2.

Comparisons 2.1 A comparison of valve inlet and outlet sizes and flange ratings is shown in Figure 1.

2.2 A comparison of valve materials as the valve was supplied by Crosby is shown in the following tabulation.

Discussion on Spring

  • Material of disc insert was changed in the field, material was originally stcinless steel 19-9-DL.

Any material dif ference noted will have no derogatory effect on the valve per-formance.

2.3 There are no dimensional differences in the valve control area, which include the nozzle, nozzle ring, disc insert, disc holder, guide and guide ring. The two (2) valve assemblies, under similar conditions (No. 48697 Mod. 2 and No.

43864) will perform identically.

  • Set pressures of Consumers Power Safety Valves are presently not as supplied and sprfng changes were cade in the field.

The nozzle ring and guide ring settings of the Dairyland Safety Valve No.

62-27-009 were adjusted during tests performed at Wyle Laboratory - the new ring positions are:

Nozzle ring (-18) and Guide ring (-10).

2. 5 The significant difference in the valve designs (excluding inlet and outlet flange ratings) is the inclusion of a bellows in the 3M,6 HCU-65 Spec. Safety Relie f Valve.

(The effects of this on valve performancs can be minimal due to the spring selection).

3.

Safety Valve Springs 3.1 The spring used in the 3M 6 HC-75 Safety Valve (Assembly No. 43864) for Con-9 suoers Power Big Rock Poi 5t Plant is based upon the valve set pressure and is critical for proper valve operation of the saf ety valve.

Report No. 3983 Page 5 3.

Safety valve Springs 3.2 Crosby Spring No. 1673 presently installed in the 3M,6 HC-75 Safety Valves at Big Rock Point Plant do not conform with the spring Gumher specified by Crosby specifications for the present set pressures tabulated above.

Spring No. 1673 which is installed in the Safety Valves is suitable for a set pressure of 1631 to 1804 psig.

3.3 The Consumers Power 3M,6 HC-75 Safety Valves, set at pressures from 1535 to 1588 psig should have Crosby Spring No. 1672 installed.

This spring is suit-able for set pressures ranging f rom 1501 to 1630 psig.

3.4 Dairyland Power 3M,6 HCU-65 Spec. Safety Relief Valves have Crosby Spring No.

1669 installed which is in agreement with Crosby specification. They are set at pressures 1390 and 1426 psig.

Crosby Spring No. 1669 is suitable for use at set pressures from 1341 to 1481 psig.

4.

Summary 4.1 This review showed that the control areas of the Crosby 3M 6 HCU-65 Spec.

2 and the 3M 6 HC-75 Safety Vaives are identical.

2 4.2 The valves performance is not affected by eaterial differences and when in-stalled for service at the sate operating and installation conditiens their performance will be similar.

4.3 Spring No. 1669 (set pressure range of 1341 to 1481 psig) is presently install-ed in the Dairyland Power 3M,6 HCU-65 Spec. Safety Relief Valves, Assembly No.

48697 Mod. 2.

This spring is proper for the set pressures per Crosby specifi-cation.

4.4 The Consumers Power 3M,6 HC-75 Safety Valves, Assembly Nunber 43864 have a spring installed that Is not in agreement with Crosby specification.

5.

Conclusion 5.1 Provided that Consumers Power 3M 6 HC-75 Safety Valves, Assembly No. 43864:

2 5.1.1 Have a spring installed that corresponds to Crosby Engineering Specification for specified set pressures.

5.1.2 The inlet and outlet installations (vessel anzzle and outlet piping) are identical to the Dairyland Power 3M 6 HCU-65 Safety Relief Valve 2

installation.

5.1.3 The Wyle Laboratory test siculated these conditions during tests.

5.2 Crosby could provide ring settings based on the testing of the Dairvland Power 3M,6 HCU-65 Spec. Assembly No. 48697 Mod 2, at Wyle Laboratories, that would give satisfactory valve performance.
