Interim Report of 10CFR50.55(e) Item on Defective Spot Welds and Power Strut Support Material (#55)

Dear Mr. Keppler:

This additional interim report on the defect'ive spot welds and Power Strut support material problem has been prepared to provide you with the current status of this problem.

The problem was originally reported to Mr. J.E. Konklin of NRC Region III by Detroit Edison's Mr. H.A. Walker, Supervisor-Construction Quality Assur-ance, on February 11, 1982.

L.K. Cmstock (a Detroit Edison Contractor) had noted a number of problems with spot welds on " Power Strut" type PS202 support material. This material was ordered by the site electrical contractor, L.K. Cmstock, frm the Van Huffel Tube Corporation. The problem was first noted in the field when the material separated at several of the manufacturer's spot welds. As a result of this, twelve samples of the " Power Strut" formed netal channels were sent to Detroit Testing Iaboratory. All twelve of the pieces tested exhibited spot weld failures.

The repair of these welds are on hold until Detroit Edison Engineering and Power Strut can calplete their review of the situation and determine a satis-factory solution.

Another report on this item, either interim or final, is scheduled to be sent to you on or before November 5,1982. If you have questions.concerning this matter, please contact Mr. H.A. Walker, Supervisor-Construction Quality Assur-anCo.

Very truly yours, h j}Y g/ /s O
