Regulatory Branch Division of Low-Level Waste Management and Decommissioning FROM:

Jc,.k D. Parrott Technical Branch Division of Low-Level Waste Management and Decommissioning

SUBJECT:

WOOD RIVER JUNCTION - USGS WELL SAMPLING - STATUS RER)RT As I will be on vacation next week, Oct. 15 - 19, someone else will have to carry on the work of trying to get the USGS wells at UNC Wood River Junction sampled. This is a status report of what I have been able to accomplish'in the last day.

USGS Cont ula -

Herb Johrston Providenc e, R.I. USGS FTS 838-4135 (Administrative Contact)

Dennis Healy Connecticut USGS FTS 244-3060 (Will be doing sampling, has sampled before and knows where the wells are) l Aelministrative Raouir-- nta -

l Herb Johnston needs a formal letter detailing the work that needs to be done.

)-

In addition, this letter should state that USGS will have access to the data, l

and that t $ can publish it when it becomes available. This letter should also contairan Activity Location Code, an administrative code for billha I

purposes ( Beni Davis does not know what this is).

l l

Mr. Johnston estimates that it will take about a week to sample the wells, the L

wells being those listed on the Oct. 3, 1990 letter from Charlie Haughney to Region I.

Mr. Johnston said that the time best suited for them to sample would.be the week of Nov. 13th.

It has been agreed that NRC will supply the L

sample bottles and will arrange to have the analytical work done and possibly r

have a NRC person on site when the samples are taken. USGS will run specific l

conductance, pH, temperature and dissolved oxygen tests in the field as part

,/

l of their standard procedures. Also using USGS standard sampling procedures, nitrate samples are preserved with mercuric chloride, this will have to be s

-checked with the lab analyzing the nitrate samples to see if this is OK.

Mr. Johnston's rough estimate of the cost is $$500.

This includes labor, materials and overhead.

1212:

Eleni Davis says that a technical assistance contract with the USGS would have to go through the Division of Contracts and therefore would take quite a while to process (about 3 months). However, she also said that since the NRC has an MOV with the DOE for technical assistance work, NRC could contract, s2; ODMI.

and that contract could be processed in a couple of days.

Eleni stated that ORAU can hire subcontractors like USGS but the NRC cannot tell 0FAU who to subcontract to, and the subcontract cost cannot exceed 50% of the cost of the total contract.

Another alternative is to have UNC hice the USGS to do the work, which might be the more expedient thing to do, and certainly cheater for NRC.
