Docket No. 50-440 s'

Mr. Steve Gannis 13511 Detroit Avenue Apt. C-9 Lakewood, Ohio 44107

Dear Mr. Gannis:

This letter is in response to your letter dated September 13, 1993, requesting further information regarding the Perry Nuclear Power Plant.

Specifically, you requested historical data on annual liquid radioactive release volumes from the plant and you further requested that the information be presented in standard form, as opposed to the scientific notation commonly used in reports.

The enclosed _ information was compiled from the Semiannual Radioactive Effluent Release Reports submitted by the licensee for the Perry Plant, as required by the plant technical specifications. These reports are available in the NRC Public Document Room (PDR), located in the Gelman Building, 2120 L Street, NW., Washington, DC 20555 and at the local public document room established for the Perry Plant at the Perry Public Library, 3753 Main Street, Perry, Ohio 44081.

You may request searches for, review, and copy documents available in the local PDR.

For information call (216) 259-3300. You may request searches from the NRC PDR by calling (800) 638-8081.

You may request copies of specific doc"ments from the NRC PDR in writing or by calling (202) 634-3273.

There is t

-e for copying and mailing the documents.

We will continue to be available to discuss with you the technical aspects of any issues associated with Perry. However, we ask that future inquiries of a non-technical nature, such as the retrieval of reports available in the PDRs, be directed to one of the PDRs rather than to the technical staff. The personnel assigned to the PDRs are there to assist in the retrieval of information. The use of this protocol will allow the technical staff to continue to concentrate on technical issues without the distraction of non-technical issues.

If you have any questions regarding the information enclosed with this letter, please contact me at (301) 504-3063 or Robert Stransky at (301) 504-1346.

Sincerely, Original Signed By:

The bulk of the liquid releases for Perry are associated with the periodic operation of the emergency service water system (ESW).

For instance, in 1992 ESW accounted for 99.8% of the liquid release volume (2,932,300,000 of the 2,938,700,000 gallons). The emergency service water system is a clean system that is considered a release path because it could potentially become contaminated. The licensee has not reported any detectable activity in any of the ESW releases in the effluent reports from 1986 through 1992.

2 Previous letters have not included the reports for 1986 because although there was a volume of effluents released, there was 0.00 measurable activity.
