This requests program office guidance in the resolution of a request by the l
U.S. Air Force (USAF) as described below.
l BACKGROUND: The Department of the Air Force by letter dated April 6,1989, i
requests clarification on disposal of nickel-thorium alloys..In an April 22, 1975, letter to NRC, the Air Force inquired whether licensure was required for processing of nickel-thorium alloy as scrap.
NRC responded that licensure was not required of scrap processors.
PROBLEM / ISSUE:
The Air Force is now seeking clarification on disposal requirements for nickel-thorium alloys which cannot be reused as. scrap metal
-i but must be disposed of as non-reusable wastes.
Since nickel-thorium alloys i
can be transferred and processed as scrap metals without licensure, the USAF is requesting whether such materials can be disposed of as non-radioactive metal waste.
i ACTION REQUIRED:
Review the submitted information and provide guidance for response to USAF.
j RECOMMENDATION:
Region IV has reviewed this request and finds that 10 CFR
{
Part 40 does not prohibit disposal of non-reusable nickel-thorium alloys as i
