20555 Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant Alternate Pluaaina Criteria Gentlemen:
On February 26, 1991, Alabama Power Company submitted its initial request for a steam generator tube support plate alternate plugging criteria.
Due to recent agreements between the industry and the NRC Staff, it is requested that review of this and the two subsequent submittals be discontinued.
Recent meetings between the NRC Staff and industry representatives have resulted in agreements to utilize degradation specific management as a generic approach to approval of the alternate plugging criteria. Farley will be used as a demonstration plant for degradation specific management, focusing on the tube support plate alternate plugging criteria.
As a demonstration plant, Farley will submit a revised package following the guidance developed by the industry and the NRC Staff.
Therefore, review of the Farley specific submittal s is no longer required and should be discontinued.
Further, several requests for additional information (RAls) have resulted from these earlier submittal..
Based on the industry approach, we do not intend to respond to any ou -tanding RAls.
We anticipate that these issues will be addressed during t-review and approval process for degradation specific management.
Review of the Unit 2 interim plugging criteria submittal dated July 29, 1993 should not be affected by this request.
