SUBJECT:
ROUTINE RADIATION PROTECTION INSPECTION AT CALLAWAY NUCLEAR POWER
STATION
This refers to the routine safety inspection conducted by Mr. D. W. Nelson of
this office on August 2 through September 2, 1993. This inspection included a
review of activities authorized for your Callaway Nuclear Power Station. At
the conclusion of the inspection, the findings were discussed with those
members of your staff identified in the enclosed report.
The enclosed copy of our inspection report identifies areas examined during
the inspection.
Within these areas, the inspection consisted of selective
examinations of procedures and representative records, interviews with
personnel, and observations of activities in progress.
No violations of NRC requirements were identified during the course of this
inspection. However, concerns were raised about the effectiveness of your
ALARA program.
.Thile the findings from your self-assessment of the ALARA
program were very good for the areas addressed, because the scope failed to
include issues involving the performance of the ALARA group such as workload,
staff size and expanding responsibilities, the overall effectiveness of the
program is still in question.
This appears to be a weakness in your self-
assessment that should be addressed.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the Commission's regulations, a copy of
this letter and the enclosed inspection report will be placed in the NRC
Public Document Room.
