Dear Mr. Chernoff:
We have reviewed Project Interface Document (PID) 05-S-58 dated July 29, 1993, which discusses a proposed temporary reconfiguration of the tailings embankment at the Grand Junction Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action Project site.
The Class I PID proposed to allow an opening in the otherwise completed disposal cell for the placement of up to 500,000 cubic yards of additional vicinity property materials over the next few years.
PID 05-S-58 includes a plan view, along with cell closure sections and details.
Based on our review of PID 05-S-58, we concur with the configuration of the proposed action.
However, the Department of Energy (DOE) also needs to provide, for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission review, the procedural details of leaving the cell open.
In particular, control details, and discussions of l
how DOE will maintain a presence at the site, sheuld be furnished.
