SUBJECT:
RADIATION PROTECTION INSPECTION AT BIG ROCK POINT
This refers to the routine safety inspection conducted by Messrs. N. Shah and
R. A. Paul of this office on August 9-13, 1993. The inspection included a
review of authorized activities for your Big Rock Point Nuclear Plant
facility. At the conclusion of the inspection, the findings were discussed'
with those members of your staff ideatified in the enclosed repo'rt.

Areas examined during the inspection are identified in this report. Within

these areas, the~ inspection consisted of a selective examination of procedures

and representative records, interviews with personnel, and observation of
,
activities in progress.

No violations of NRC requirements were identified during the course of this
inspection.
While radiological performance was good owing to improvements ~ in ALARA'
planning and communications between work groups, additional management
attention was needed to address concerns in radiological surveillance of
contaminated areas, and continuing problems in plant housekeeping. These
concerns were being addressed by your staff and will be reviewed in subsequent
,
inspections.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the Commission's regulations, a copy of
this letter and the enclosed inspection report will be placed in the NRC

Public Document Room.
We will gladly discuss any questions you have concerning this inspection.
