Dear Mr. Dimanshteyn:
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has received your letter of May 10, 1993, to Senator J. Lieberman on the potential application of Thermal Research, Inc.'s Anti-Explosion and Fire Suppression Blankets to commercial nuclear power plants.
We appreciate your interest in the issue of fire protection at nuclear power plants and thank you for the information on your products. Our review of fire protection systems, however, is associated with approval of a plant-specific application after an NRC licensee has selected a system and determined that it meets NRC regulations.
NRC licensees use fire barriers to satisfy the NRC's fire protection requirements. These licensees separate one train of cables and equipment needed to shut down the plant in the event of a fire from its redundant train with passive fire barriers. Our requirements for the protection of redundant trains do not include explosion protection standards.
The nuclear power industry is coordinating resolution of NRC concerns related to the adequacy of currently installed fire barriers through the Nuclear Management and Resources Council and the Electric Power Research Institute.
