August 23, 1993 Docket Nos. 50-445 and 50-446 Mr. William J. Cahill, Jr.

Group Vice President, Nuclear TU Electric Company 400 North Olive Street, L.B. 81 Dallas, Texas 75201

Dear Mr. Cahill:

SUBJECT:

COMANCHE PEAK STEAM ELECTRIC STATION - RESPONSE TO NRC BULLETIN 93-02, " DEBRIS PLUGGING OF EMERGENCY CORE COOLING SUCTION STRAINERS" (TAC NOS. M86548 AND M86549)

This letter acknowledges receipt of your response dated June 10, 1993, to NRC Bulletin 93-02 (Bulletin). The Bulletin was issued May 11, 1993, to all nuclear power reactor licensees.

It requested licensees to identify fibrous material in the primary containment, take any necessary compensatory measures, and remove any such material.

Your response stated that no fibrous filter material, such as described in the Bulletin, was identified as being used or stored in your containments. Your response documented a review of the most recent Unit I and 2 containment closeout inspection and verification data sheets for subsequent containment entries. Additionally, you performed a special inspection of Unit 2 containment (which was shutdown at the time) that revealed no temporary fibrous material.

Based on the above, we consider your actions to be acceptable. However, even though Unit 1 is subject to the same procedures as Unit 2, we would expect you to perform a similar special inspection of Unit I containment during your next shutdown.

Please retain any records of your actions in response to this Bulletin, as subsequent inspection activities may be conducted in regards to this issue.

We consider Tac Nos. M86548 and M86549 to be closed.

Should you have any questions, please contact me at (301) 504-1334, or Tom Bergman at (301) 504-1330.

Sincerely,.n

/
