CHAIRMAN The Honorable Joseph Lieberman, Chairman Subcommittee on Clean Air and Nuclear Regulation Committee on Environment and Public Works United States Senate Washington, D.
C.
20510
Dear Mr. Chairman:
Again, we wish to express our appreciation for the opportunity last month to appear before the Environment and Public Works Subcommittee on Clean Air and Nuclear Regulation to provide you information concerning NRC's activities to encourage employees to come forward and raise safety concerns without fear of retaliation.
During the hearing and in our testimony, I indicated that the Commission had established a review team to review various issues associated with this matter and that its report was due the Commission in the Fall of 1993.
Given the complexity of the issues and the importance of having a firm foundation for their recommendations, the review team has identified the need to solicit public comments on the issues, meet with senior members of the NRC, visit other agencies, and hold several public meetings.
As a result, our original expectations for a report in three months, October 15, 1993, allowed too little time for a comprehensive analysis of the issues.
Upon reconsideration, the Commission has extended the review effort an additional three months to January 14, 1994.
Following our review of the report, we will provide it to the Subcommittee.
Sincerely, d
Ivan Selin cc:
