Dear Mr. Gehm:

We have reviewed your letter dated May 18, 1993, concerning NRC Information Notice (IN) 93-33, " Potential Deficiency of Certain Class 1E Instrumentation and Control Cables." We appreciate the comments and information you-have-provided.

The purpose of this IN was to notify licensees of the Sandia test results l

which are documented in test report, NUREG/CR-5772, " Aging, Condition i

Monitoring, and Loss-of-Coolant Accident (LOCA) Tests of Class IE Electrical Cables," Volumes 1, 2, and 3.

As stated in the IN, it is expected that the licensees will review the information for applicability to their facilities and consider actions as appropriate.

This may include, depending on their application, a reassurance of adequate basis for qualification of those Class IE cable types that are identified in the IN as either having failed during i

the accident tests or that exhibited marginal insulation resistances.

We i

believe that the information in the IN is factual and provides appropriate notification to the nuclear industry of significant data for safety-related

?

cables that could be subjected to design-basis events at nuclear power plants.

Although a number of different factors may affect the test results, as you suggest, the pertinence of such factors for a particular case, and the effect-of such factors on operability can only be determined by assessment of i

individual cases.

Again, we appreciate the comments and information you have provided.

If you have any questions or have additional information, we would be willing to discuss them with you.
