TASK ORDER NO. 1 BRS IMPROVED USER INTERFACE (MENU ACCESS AND ON-LINE TUTORIAL)
Statement of Work A.
BACKGROUND.
The PDR's Bibliographic Retrieval System (BRS) provides a powerful set of user commands which allow retrieval of desired NRC document information in response to highly complex user demands.
Although the commands are brief and readily retained when used frequently, the PDR has found formal, on-site training to be necessary if the user is to get best results.
Furthermore, infrequent users often do not achieve a comfortable level of familiarity.and as a
result often need repeated PDR staff assistance.
An increase in the number of infrequent users is expected to require greatly increased formal training requirements and higher levels of staff involvement in user searches.
B.
OBJECTIVES.
The PDR vishes to enhance the BRS user interface in order to meet the following goals:
l 1.Significantly reduce or eliminate the need for formal training sessions at the PDR for new users.
- 2. Substantively decrease or eliminate the need for refresher training for infrequent users.
- 3. Greatly lessen or eliminate the need for formal training on new l
ERS (eatures.
- 4. Increase the infrequent user's satisfaction with BRS search results.
- 5. Provide information on the user's search inputs and results to PDR staff when the user seeks assistance in order to reduce staff time and improve customer response.
C.
FEATURES AND FACILITIES (Products to be costed separately).
l In order to meet these objectives, the following are rdquired additions to the BRS.
PRODUCT. A "new user" mode which helps a user with knowledge only of the 1PDR-BRS telephone number to register for use of the system, conduct scarches, and order documents.

4 Product 4.
An "I need help" command to allow an on-line user to describe her/his search objectives and problems with results obtained through BRS and to send this information with the history of the user's session to the PDR staff for assistance.
