Dear Mr. Tsirigotis:
As we discussed at a recent meeting on cost estimation techniques for decommissioning projects, I am enclosing a copy of an analysis prepared by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Office of Policy Planning on the costs of low-level radioactive waste (LLW) disposal facilities. This analysis was prepared to provide information on incurred and prajected costs associated with the development of LLW dispc, sal facilities as a result of the Low-Level Radioactive Waste Policy Amendments Act of 1985.
The analysis also includes pertinent information regarding the costs of LLW disposal facilities in other countries.
Also in response to the meeting on cost estimation techniques, NRC staff contacted representatives of the Department of Energy's Uranium Mill Tailings i
Remedial Action Project (UMTRAP) Office to inquire about the availability of r
detailed cost data for completed remediation projects involving uranium mill tailings.
Rather than furnish the information to NRC for forwarding onto EPA, i
the DOE representatives stated that they would prefer to provide the information directly to EPA.
The UMTRAP representatives stated that they will coordinate evaluation of this request with Andy Wallo within D0E.
